Nestled in the heart of Tahoe Vista and minutes from Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort, this park center offers a network of groomed trails, perfect for both beginners and seasoned skiers/snowshoers. The gentle slopes and well-marked trails make it an ideal spot for children to learn and enjoy cross-country skiing in a safe and welcoming environment. Don’t worry, there are enough expert hills for days of wandering. For those new to Nordic skiing, try Tahoe City XC Ski Area offering lessons tailored to different skill levels and ensuring everyone has a chance to experience the thrill of gliding through the snow. Tips for Traveling to Lake Tahoe this December

Pack for an alpine winter. Winter in our alpine climate is both majestic and unforgiving, so always be prepared for changing weather conditions—especially when the sun goes down. Layers are your friends! Start with moisture-wicking base layers, add insulating layers like fleece or down jackets, and top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer shell. You will also need waterproof and warm boots (with tread for snow and ice), gloves, thermal socks and beanies.

An eye on the weather. Watch weather forecasts and road conditions, as weather changes quickly. Check weather forecasts and road conditions regularly before your trip. Snow and ice can affect roadways and driveways, so be prepared for potentially challenging driving conditions. It’s advisable to have snow chains in your vehicle, and if you’re not experienced in driving in snowy conditions, consider using public transportation or shuttles. Sign up for county and state text alerts to stay updated on travel advisories, emergency updates, and road closures.

Drive cautiously. Especially in snowy or icy conditions. Allow extra time for travel and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Always keep your gas tank at least half full and carry emergency supplies such as a shovel, blankets, water, and non-perishable food in your vehicle.

Stay hydrated and nourished, The cold weather can dehydrate you, so drink plenty of water. Additionally, keep snacks or energy bars handy to maintain your energy levels during outdoor activities.

Safety in the snow: If you plan on skiing, snowboarding, or engaging in other snow-related activities, follow safety guidelines, and be aware of your skill level. And remember, it’s always best to frolic with a friend. 

Sun protection: Even in winter, the sun’s rays can be strong, especially with the reflection off the snow. Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes.

Respect wildlife and environment: Lake Tahoe is home to various wildlife, especially in the surrounding forests. Please never feed wild animals–especially bears-and ensure you dispose of trash properly to prevent wildlife encounters. Pack out what you pack in, and dispose of waste properly.

Use public transportation: Opt for public transport like TART or resort shuttles to reduce road traffic.

With nearly record snow pack, its time to experience the best Spring ski season North Lake Tahoe has had in years. If there was too much snow to navigate a few months ago, you will not want to miss out now. With that cold nip hanging in the morning and a little freeze at night, the mountain ski conditions are staying great all day long—miles of laid-back groomers, wide-open terrain and 40 and 50+ degree bluebird days. This is the season to be no place else, but…here!

Springtime in Tahoe also means the sun shines a little higher and brighter, making those longer days a time for even more inspiration. After a record day of hot laps (perhaps), there is nothing quite like springtime après on that sun-drenched deck or patio to soak it all up. This is where goggle tans, crazy hats, Hawaiian shirts and jean shorts make the mountain even more colorful. Don’t forget yours!

Ski through May and Beyond!

And, the good news is Palisades Tahoe and Alpine will be open through the end of May; Alpine will remain open weekends in June and for 4th of July. Couple that with some awesome mid-week lodging specials at Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort, and the fun factor gets even better—on and off the slopes. 

Family-Ready Adventures

For families with younger aged children who want a break from the snow, try this awesome, but lesser known experience: A trip to the Animal Ark Wild Life Sanctuary, just outside of Reno in the Nevada foothills. A 38-acre wildlife sanctuary and loving home for injured and non-releasable wildlife as well as some of the most exotic species from across the globe. Check for hours of operation before heading out. 

For something a little closer to your Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort basecamp, try an afternoon of lake watching on our serene and 275 foot beach. You will also find peaceful exploration while sledding, snowshoeing and hiking on nicely groomed trails directly behind our Resort at the North Tahoe Vista Regional Park.
