Nestled in the heart of North Lake Tahoe, here you will find rustic elegance fused with modern comforts, all with lakeside and lake view accommodations. More than a getaway, it’s a vacation destination catering to families seeking outdoor fun & adventures and couples yearning for that romantic escape. Get ready to embrace the warmth and ‘chill’ in a winter playground that’s as beautiful as it is exhilarating.

Take to the Slopes

First things first: it’s time to hit the slopes! North Lake Tahoe is home to some of North America’s largest and best ski resorts, with budget and ability-friendly options for everyone. With 11 ski resorts including Palisades Tahoe, Northstar California and Mount Rose, North Lake Tahoe is mecca for snowboarders and skiers. So, grab your gear and get ready to make some turns.

Beyond the Lifts

Not a skier or snowboarder? No problem! Lace up those boots and venture into a snow-covered playground. Hiking trails that transformed from summer beauty are now serene winter landscapes. Channel your inner explorer with snowshoes or XC skis at places like Tahoe City XC Center or North Lake Tahoe’s Recreational Park, with miles of trails to explore. Prepare to be captivated by the stunning surroundings as you glide through snow-covered forests and open meadows. Try a sled or toboggan (available at Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort front desk for guests) at the regional park, take a snowmobile tour, or brave the Northstar ice rink amidst snowy landscapes — all offering a magical touch to the season.

North Tahoe Regional Park is a haven for Nordic skiing enthusiasts! Nestled in the heart of Tahoe Vista and minutes from Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort, this park center offers a network of groomed trails, perfect for both beginners and seasoned skiers/snowshoers. The gentle slopes and well-marked trails make it an ideal spot for children to learn and enjoy cross-country skiing in a safe and welcoming environment. Don’t worry, there are enough expert hills for days of wandering. For those new to Nordic skiing, try Tahoe City XC Ski Area offering lessons tailored to different skill levels and ensuring everyone has a chance to experience the thrill of gliding through the snow. They also have rental options available, so you can hit the trails even if you left your equipment at home.

Festive Cheer and Marshmallows

‘Tis the season’ to play hard … and then kick back as North Lake Tahoe decks the halls with tree-lighting ceremonies, festive evenings, and enough twinkling lights to make Santa jealous. After your fun filled day, leave time to cozy up next to a big fire pit at Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort for a big cozy chill. Bring wine, cider or hot cocoa (extra marshmallows, please!) and bask in the holiday spirit as you gaze upon white peaked mountains surrounding Lake Tahoe. The friendly staff adds to the welcoming atmosphere, making it feel like a cheery welcome home!

Dining in a Winter Wonderland

After a day of snow-filled adventures, relax with a glass of wine in one of North Lake Tahoe’s mountain cuisine dining highlights such as Soule Domain (reservations, please), Lanza’s for traditional Italian or The Old Post Office for breakfast and lunch.

Tips for Traveling to Lake Tahoe this December

Pack for an alpine winter. Winter in our alpine climate is both majestic and unforgiving, so always be prepared for changing weather conditions—especially when the sun goes down. Layers are your friends! Start with moisture-wicking base layers, add insulating layers like fleece or down jackets, and top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer shell. You will also need waterproof and warm boots (with tread for snow and ice), gloves, thermal socks and beanies.

An eye on the weather. Watch weather forecasts and road conditions, as weather changes quickly. Check weather forecasts and road conditions regularly before your trip. Snow and ice can affect roadways and driveways, so be prepared for potentially challenging driving conditions. It’s advisable to have snow chains in your vehicle, and if you’re not experienced in driving in snowy conditions, consider using public transportation or shuttles. Sign up for county and state text alerts to stay updated on travel advisories, emergency updates, and road closures.

Drive cautiously. Especially in snowy or icy conditions. Allow extra time for travel and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Always keep your gas tank at least half full and carry emergency supplies such as a shovel, blankets, water, and non-perishable food in your vehicle.

Stay hydrated and nourished, The cold weather can dehydrate you, so drink plenty of water. Additionally, keep snacks or energy bars handy to maintain your energy levels during outdoor activities.

Safety in the snow: If you plan on skiing, snowboarding, or engaging in other snow-related activities, follow safety guidelines, and be aware of your skill level. And remember, it’s always best to frolic with a friend.

Sun protection: Even in winter, the sun’s rays can be strong, especially with the reflection off the snow. Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes.

Respect wildlife and environment: Lake Tahoe is home to various wildlife, especially in the surrounding forests. Please never feed wild animals–especially bears-and ensure you dispose of trash properly to prevent wildlife encounters. Pack out what you pack in, and dispose of waste properly.

Use public transportation: Opt for public transport like TART or resort shuttles to reduce road traffic.
