February 29, 2024 | Jill Amen

Straddling the state border between California and Nevada, high in the Sierra Nevada, North Lake Tahoe is where you come for the ultimate year-round vacation destination.  Where early spring means epic snow-play,  adventure and family fun. With downhill ski parks, dozens of snow-play adventures, indoor sports, and off-beat spots to wander, there’s an activity for everyone, of all ages. So grab your sense of adventure and your snow gear, and get the up-to-date inside scoop on all North Lake Tahoe has to offer.

Spring On the Slopes

The first signs of spring start to appear in March in North Lake Tahoe. Although the temperatures begin to creep upwards, the mountain pack remains for downhill skiing and boarding.  And, fresh powder keeps coming with an average of 11-12 days of snowfall during the month. Plus, most of our 11 North Lake Tahoe’s ski resorts expect to operate well into April with snowmaking equipment keeping the slopes packed and powdery.

March can also be a good month to take advantage of lower prices for passes. The days get a bit longer with a full 9 hours of daylight; temperatures reach highs of 46°F (8°C). Maybe shed a few layers and enjoy some unbeatable mountain sun—with a little sunscreen, please!

This Spring’s Mountain-Side Festivals and Events

Many of our communities and ski resorts host fun events and festivals during the early spring season, adding an extra layer of excitement. From parades and costume parties to live music concerts and beer festivals, there’s always something happening on the mountain in the spring.

North Lake Tahoe SNOWFEST. Thursday, Feb 29th thru Sunday, March 10, 2024. Not to miss! This 42nd annual celebration is one of the largest winter mountain festivals on the west coast. Here you will find forty different family-friendly mountain-town events all around Tahoe City and Kings Beach.

Saint Patrick’s Day Celebrations. Wednesday, March 17th. Don’t forget to spread some Irish cheer while celebrating St Paddy’s Day at Auld Dubliner at Palisades Tahoe with over 100 whiskeys, Irish beer on draft, live music and good-old Irish fare.

Diamond Peak’s Last Tracks. 12:30pm thru Mar 27 2024. As one of the most popular and unique on-mountain events, Diamond Peak hosts an awesome wine/beer-tasting event every Wednesday afternoon through the end of ski season on their Snowflake Lodge Deck. Tickets for this event include a half-day lift ticket leading up to the actual wine and beer-tasting event.

WinterWonderGrass. The beginning of April (April 5th – 7th) brings WinterWonderGrass to Palisades Tahoe, an annual music and beer festival that combines bluegrass and acoustic music with craft beer tasting.

Your Winter Adventure Guide: Exploring North Lake Tahoe this Winter – On and Off the Slopes

February 13, 2024 | Jill Amen

As snow blankets our shores and mountains this season, North Lake Tahoe emerges once again as a haven for winter adventurers seeking both adrenaline-pumping experiences on the slopes as well as cozy, family-friendly activities off the beaten path.

It begins at Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort, a basecamp for all winter adventure in North Lake Tahoe. With dozens of options for every type of winter enthusiast, MLRTahoe is at the epicenter of it all—minutes from world class ski resorts, snowmobiling, XC skiing and all winter play, fun and entertainment. Whether you’re an avid skier, a snowboarder, mountaineer or simply love to play in the snow, there’s something for everyone this winter.

Skiing and Snowboarding

North Lake Tahoe is renowned for its world-class ski resorts, boasting diverse terrain suitable for all skill levels. With 11 resorts in North Lake Tahoe, there is no shortage of options for skiers and snowboarders alike. Some of our resorts can see over 400 inches of snow in a given year, attracting skiers and boarders from all over the world.

Each resort has particular characteristics and features that attract certain ‘downhillers’. For example, for challenging slopes and runs try Palisades Tahoe (formerly Squaw Valley and Alpine) and Mount Rose. Mount Rose’s Chutes offer some of the longest vertical runs in North America. And, we mean steep terrain. You will get 1000+ feet of north-facing slopes with pitches from 40-55 degrees. For family-friendly to expert try Northstar California, which is centrally located and near Truckee.

Smaller resorts such as Homewood Mountain Resort on the West Shore are very family friendly and offer some wind protection along with awesome mountain and Lake Tahoe views. Diamond Peak offers jaw-dropping views of Lake Tahoe and a vertical drop of 1,840 feet, which make it the fourth longest drop in the Lake Tahoe area. It also caters to families of all abilities.

Boreal, Sugar Bowl, Soda Springs and Tahoe Donner–all near Truckee– also have some unique offerings. Boreal Ski Resort is the first and only all-mountain terrain park in the Lake Tahoe region. Sugar Bowl is a world-class mountain resort that features four peaks and 95 runs spread out over 1,500 acres.

Backcountry

For those with a passion for adventure and craving that adrenaline rush, embark on an exhilarating journey through Lake Tahoe’s pristine backcountry where miles of untouched powder and breathtaking alpine scenery await. There are also great opportunities for split-boarding on your own up the mountain. Or, why not take a snowcat to get there? Either way, skiers, boarders and mountaineers can climb or glide down steep chutes, navigate serene forests, and challenge themselves on diverse terrain.

The backcountry is beautiful and offers the ultimate winter adventure, but it can also be dangerous and challenging. It is important to know your terrain. Avalanches, elements and shorter days can be real considerations when going ‘back country’. The best way to experience the backcountry is with avalanche trained pros and experienced guides who will lead you to these hidden powder stashes and untouched slopes—all providing a safe and unforgettable adventure for thrill-seekers.

Off-the-Slope Adventures

Take a break from the slopes. Beyond the ski resorts, North Lake Tahoe offers dozens of off-the-slope adventures waiting to be explored for both enthusiasts and families. And many offer free or low costs options compared to daily lift ticket prices.

XC Skiing and Snow Shoeing: There are so many benefits to these activities that we can’t list them all. These sports are great for kids and adults of all ages and fitness levels, with varying degrees of challenge depending on the terrain. Both engage the upper and lower body, as well as the core muscles, making it an excellent full-body workout. It  will definitely elevate the heart rate.  It can also be a safer alternative to downhill sports. Less speed, less crowds, less impact.  Plus, both of these sports are very accessible in North Lake Tahoe. They require less equipment and cost than downhill skiing, and are often enjoyed on terrain that is free or with nominal day passes. Just as importantly, XC skiing brings a direct connection with nature in peaceful and beautiful settings.

Maybe it is time to embark on a scenic snowshoeing or cross-country skiing adventure through the region’s pristine forests and meadows. North Lake Tahoe rental shops offer cross-country skis and snowshoes rentals, while some resorts and tour providers, like Tahoe Adventure Company, offer guided snowshoe tours—even under the stars.

Here is a list of some of the most popular and accessible snow parks in North Lake Tahoe:

Tahoe Donner Cross Country Ski Center (TDXC). One of the top cross-country centers in North America, it spans more than 2,800 acres, and offers snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals, and lessons.

TahoeXC. Located near Tahoe City this park has exceptionally well-maintained groomed trails in the midst of the forest with warming huts along the way. Great for classic and skate skiing. Some trails are even dog-friendly and there are also snowshoe trails as well. The park offers day and season passes for a small fee. Those under 19 and over 70 years are free.

Nevada Nordic near Mount Rose offers a local donation-based groomed trail and open meadow system accessible for everyone.

North Tahoe Regional Park is very family friendly, free and always fun for everyone.

Fun for the Family

Sledding: For a fun afternoon, grab a sled –no charge for MLRTahoe guests–and head to one of the sledding hills close by such as North Tahoe Regional Park. Choose your thrill level and find the perfect photo op for the family’s snow play day! Also, try Tahoe City Winter Sports Park, but make a reservation during the high winter season.

Build a Snowman: For a memorable family outing, try our ‘Snowman Snowdown’ Winter event and contest throughout the winter at Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort. Build your own snow creature on the beach. Get imaginative with lots of fun tools, props that you can grab directly from the MLRTahoe resort office.

Snowmobiling: For the ultimate winter thrill, embark on a guided snowmobile tour through the backcountry, where you can race through snow-covered forests and take in panoramic views of the surrounding mountains.

Ice Skating: Head up to Northstar Calfiornia for some ice skating in the village. Or, head up to Tahoe City’s Winter Sports Park for a great day or evening of slipping, sliding and blading. Both are ideal for families.

Disco Tubing: Palisades Tahoe will offer Disco Tubing on select dates through March 9, 2024. Disco tubing features colorful LED lights and lasers, making for a unique sledding experience.

Après Ski and Nightlife

After a day on the slopes, unwind and indulge in the vibrant après ski scene that North Lake Tahoe has to offer. Cozy up by the fire with a hot cocoa or craft beer at one of the many slope-side lodges, where live music and breathtaking mountain views create the perfect ambiance for relaxation.

For those looking to continue the party into the evening, explore the lively nightlife options in the surrounding towns of Truckee, Tahoe City and Crystal Bay. From quaint pubs and wine bars to bustling breweries, casinos and concert venues, there’s no shortage of places to celebrate a day well spent on the mountain. Check out these dining options during your stay.

Snowman Snowdown: On the Shores of Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort

December 27, 2023 | Jill Amen

"When life gives you snow, make snowmen"

When life gives you snow, make snowmen”

Imagine:  A parade of ‘frolicy’, frosted snow figures—all taking shape against the wintery backdrop of North Lake Tahoe’s crystal blue waters. Like a fairy tale, these whimsical figures come to life-–telling their stories of winter magic on the enchanted shores of Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort

From Snow Flakes to Snow Beings

Meet Frosty, a joyful being made of snow; a figure who embodies creative snow creatures of all kinds–snow families, snow dogs, and even snow superheroes.  Above all, Frosty stands tall or short, lean or round, but above all symbolizes self-expression and the wonderful mosaic of identities in all their beautiful forms.

Multigenerational Magic

Building a snowman today, means memories for a lifetime; a testament to life’s simple pleasures. The cheeriest of gatherings as families, friends, and kindred spirits celebrate the inherently magical nature of building snowmen. A heartwarming tradition that transcends generations, the magic captures laughter, joy, and always that sprinkle of childhood wonder.

Escape the Crowds

As skiers flock to the slopes on weekends and holidays this season, escape the crowds and queues for a family play day—-a charming, laid-back activity away from it all. An opportunity to immerse in a different kind of winter wonderland where families bond, children’s imaginations soar, and even the busiest of days find a moment of tranquility.

The Art of Building a Snowman

Building a snowman is much more than just rolling and stacking snowballs. The art lies in the act of creating. giving your snowman character, personality, and its own unique flair. It’s a blend of technique, sculpting, decorating, and storytelling on a snowy canvas.

Firstly, The Basics. Think moist, sticky snow—perfect for sculpting your snow pal. Bring a small bucket and beach shovel if you have one handy. While a carrot nose is a classic ingredient, consider non-food items when bringing your snow creature to life—without attracting wildlife.

Technique. Try rolling three snowballs of different sizes—base, torso, head—packing them tightly as you go. Then, the real fun begins: stacking, decorating, and giving your snow creation its distinct personality. For more fun information on building your snowman try these techniques here

Organic Materials. Twigs, branches, pinecones, pine needles, rocks, stones, and leaves help create the elements you need for face, eyes, noses, hair, and creative snowman attire. Try pine needles for hair and facial features. Small leaves create patterns and designs. Smooth rocks or pebbles can serve as expressive eyes and mouths. Ask the front office for any organic supplies they may have on hand.

Accessorize. Scarves, bandanas, or fabric strips add vibrant colors and patterns. How about a top hat, cap or beanie for color and character? And, playful sun or eyeglasses add dimension and personality. Get creative with costume jewelry like bracelets, necklaces, or earrings. Decorative buttons, beads, or sequins can embellish the theme. Old gloves or mittens give your snowman “hands” and keep them warm.

Stand Out. Try glow sticks or battery powered lights to illuminate your sculpture. Non-toxic colored spray paints can create super cool designs. Bring along colorful ribbons or streamers to adorn your snowman’s arms or as decorative accents.

Get Playful. Consider small toys or props like a miniature snowboard, tiny skis, or a mini broomstick to give your snowman a playful touch.

And remember, creativity knows no bounds!

Hold Onto Your Snowballs—There’s a Contest, Too!

Looking forward, join us this January and February for an annual tradition: our ‘Snowman Snowdown’. Unleash your creativity, compete, and win fantastic prizes—like a free night’s stay at Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort and weekly prizes for the kids!  Check out the rules and prizes here.

Tips for Traveling to Lake Tahoe this December

Pack for an alpine winter. Winter in our alpine climate is both majestic and unforgiving, so always be prepared for changing weather conditions—especially when the sun goes down. Layers are your friends! Start with moisture-wicking base layers, add insulating layers like fleece or down jackets, and top it off with a waterproof and windproof outer shell. You will also need waterproof and warm boots (with tread for snow and ice), gloves, thermal socks and beanies.

An eye on the weather. Watch weather forecasts and road conditions, as weather changes quickly. Check weather forecasts and road conditions regularly before your trip. Snow and ice can affect roadways and driveways, so be prepared for potentially challenging driving conditions. It’s advisable to have snow chains in your vehicle, and if you’re not experienced in driving in snowy conditions, consider using public transportation or shuttles. Sign up for county and state text alerts to stay updated on travel advisories, emergency updates, and road closures.

Drive cautiously. Especially in snowy or icy conditions. Allow extra time for travel and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Always keep your gas tank at least half full and carry emergency supplies such as a shovel, blankets, water, and non-perishable food in your vehicle.

Stay hydrated and nourished, The cold weather can dehydrate you, so drink plenty of water. Additionally, keep snacks or energy bars handy to maintain your energy levels during outdoor activities.

Safety in the snow: If you plan on skiing, snowboarding, or engaging in other snow-related activities, follow safety guidelines, and be aware of your skill level. And remember, it’s always best to frolic with a friend.

Sun protection: Even in winter, the sun’s rays can be strong, especially with the reflection off the snow. Don’t forget sunscreen and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes.

Respect wildlife and environment: Lake Tahoe is home to various wildlife, especially in the surrounding forests. Please never feed wild animals–especially bears-and ensure you dispose of trash properly to prevent wildlife encounters. Pack out what you pack in, and dispose of waste properly.

Use public transportation: Opt for public transport like TART or resort shuttles to reduce road traffic.

Embrace the Chill and Thrill

Lake Tahoe in December is calling, and it’s ready to sprinkle you with snowflakes, thrills, and holiday cheer. So, grab your gear, your holiday spirit, and your sense of adventure and we will see you at Mourelatos Lakeshore Resort—your basecamp for winter adventure!
